European Oriental Rugs

Rugs were not commonly used on the floor in European interiors until the 1800s. The Crusades brought Turkish carpets to all of Europe, where they were mainly hung on walls or used on tables. Only in the 1600s with the opening of trade routes were a major number of Persian rugs introduced into Europe.

Flat weave carpet became popular as European Oriental Rugs. It is created by weaving vertical and horizontal threads. Types of flat woven oriental rugs include kilim, soumak, plain weave, and tapestry weave. European flat woven carpets include Venetian, Dutch, damask, list, haircloth, and ingrain.

Today every type of European oriental rug can be found from used, genuine carpets to affordable new runners. Sizes range from 2 x3 to 12 x 15. Contemporary designs and a variety of shapes can make a European oriental rug a focal point for any room.
