Tibetan Oriental Rugs

Antique Tibetan oriental rugs are now some of the most desirable in the oriental-rug-collectors market. Originally made by the people in Tibet from the local highland`s virgin wool sheep, nowadays some aspects of the rug making process have been taken over by machines. Tibetans themselves use rugs for a variety of purposes including flooring, wall hangings, religious ceremonies and horse saddles.

The 1949 invasion of Chinese communists changed the history of oriental carpets. Tibetan oriental rug weavers started immigrating to India and Nepal at that time, taking their craft with them. Nowadays, the rug business in Nepal is one of its largest industries. Of all current oriental rug makers, those making Tibetan rugs feature more contemporary designs.
